My HSKi Experience
Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
Certainly! My name is Martins, and I am a graduate of law from the prestigious Girne American University. In addition to my law degree, I also hold a master’s degree in Social Applied Psychology and have numerous experiences in dealing with vulnerable individuals in our society. From 2016-2018, I held the positions of ex-vice president and senate president at my university.
Why did you choose to volunteer with HSKi?
I chose to volunteer with HSKi because it is an organization that focuses mainly on street kids. Back when I was in Sunday school, we had a phrase, “Catch them young,” which meant getting to know kids while they are still young before the world tells them who to be. It’s an honor to be a part of the lives of these kids and to make the change I wish to see in the world.
What was your first cultural shock?
My first experience of cultural shock after so many years abroad was realizing that people back home judge others based on looks rather than personality. I wanted to volunteer in different organizations but was treated differently based on my looks but when I walked into the HSKi building and someone treated me as though they couldn’t see my locks, it made me realize I was in the right place. HSKi is a place where people are not judged by their appearance but by the content of their hearts and the change they are willing to make in the world around them.

What has been your best moment with the kids?
My best moment so far has been the realization that I am capable of making the change I crave in the world through these kids. Teaching a child who believed they couldn’t and seeing that child succeed in that same field has been satisfying and worthy of every moment I sacrificed in that regard.
What would you like the world to know about HSKi?
I would like the world to know that we all have a unique role to play in shaping the future we are so optimistic about, and the best way to do this is to invest in our kids. HSKi is an organization the world needs to watch out for in this regard. In my short time here, I have seen transformations that I could only have imagined in my mind. I have seen kids who initially wanted to be bus conductors changing their minds and wanting to be pilots as in a short time, they realized that their dreams are valid.
